The 10th International Conference on Civil, Building and Structural Engineering (I3CSE 2026) was successfully held in Guangzhou from May 28 to 31, 2026. The conference was hosted by the Guangdong Society of Geotechnical Mechanics and Engineering and South China Agricultural University (SCAU), organized by the College of Water Conservancy and Civil Engineering at SCAU, and supported byTech Science Press andICE Publishing. Centered on cutting-edge issues and engineering practices in civil, building and structural engineering, the conference facilitated academic exchanges around smart cities, green buildings, structural safety, geotechnical engineering, structural health monitoring, intelligent construction, and sustainable development. Approximately 200 experts, scholars, engineers, technicians, and young researchers from universities, research institutes, and enterprises participated both on-site and online.

Opening Ceremony: Innovation and Development in Civil, Building and Structural Engineering

Opening ceremony of I3CSE 2026
Opening ceremony

At the opening ceremony,Prof. Guanghua Yang, Chairman of the Guangdong Society of Geotechnical Mechanics and Engineering, andProf. Wei Zhang, Vice Dean of the College of Water Conservancy and Civil Engineering at SCAU, delivered welcome addresses. Both speakers extended their warm welcome to all participants and noted that I3CSE's continued presence at South China Agricultural University has established a stable and open academic exchange platform for civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and related interdisciplinary fields. The conference aimed to promote the integration of theoretical research, engineering applications, and international collaboration through keynote lectures, parallel sessions, and young scholar presentations.

Five distinguished experts were invited to deliver keynote lectures at the conference:

  • Prof. Guanghua Yang, Senior Professor-level Engineer, presented"Safety and Risk in Urban Tunnel Engineering: Lessons from Engineering Incidents", reflecting on critical lessons from tunnel engineering failures.

  • Prof. Guoxiong Mei, Changjiang Distinguished Professor of Zhejiang University, presented"Reflections on Several Concepts of Settlement", offering new perspectives on settlement analysis.

  • Prof. Zhenyu Yin, Associate Dean of the Research Institute for Land and Space at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, presented"Hybrid Meta-Particle Method for Large Deformation Analysis", introducing an innovative numerical approach.

  • Prof. David Bassir, Overseas Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education and Professor at Dongguan University of Technology, presented"Contributions of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twin Concepts to Intelligent Structural Monitoring", showcasing advances in AI-driven infrastructure monitoring.

  • Prof. Chong Jiang, National Natural Science Foundation of China Evaluation Expert and Professor at Central South University, presented"Calculation Method for Cyclic Lateral Response of Pile Foundations Considering Sand Convection Effects", addressing complex soil-structure interaction problems.

The five keynote lectures covered a comprehensive spectrum spanning geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, intelligent monitoring, and infrastructure safety. These presentations not only addressed practical challenges in urban renewal, underground space development, and marine engineering construction, but also highlighted the growing trends of digitalization, intelligentization, and refined analysis within the civil engineering discipline.

Invited Lectures: Bio-mediated Geotechnics, Soil-Rock Mixture Testing, and Academic Publishing

The afternoon invited lecture session featured three insightful presentations.Dr. Mayao Cheng from Foshan University,Associate Prof. Pei Zhang from Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, andMr. Benjamin Ramster from ICE Publishing delivered talks on innovative geotechnical reinforcement methods, complex soil mechanics experiments, and the dissemination of academic achievements, respectively. Together, these lectures provided participants with a complete perspective spanning research methodology, engineering validation, and scholarly publication.

Oral Presentations and Awards: Young Researchers Showcase Diverse Research Outcomes

The oral presentation sessions held on May 29–30 featured young researchers from Chongqing University, Tongji University, China Academy of Transportation Sciences, Hohai University, and other institutions. Presentation topics included tunnel support, bridge crack identification, wind-induced structural response, rock failure mechanisms, seismic resilience, material durability and self-healing, covering areas such as foundations, slopes, pile foundations, concrete structures, steel structures, and cultural heritage protection. The presentations integrated experimental studies, numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and engineering applications, while incorporating emerging technologies such as machine learning, edge computing, database systems, and intelligent monitoring — reflecting the interdisciplinary and intelligent evolution of civil engineering. Both on-site and online discussions were lively and engaging.

During the conference,Best Paper Awards,Best Poster Awards, andBest Oral Presentation Awards were presented to encourage young researchers to showcase innovative achievements, enhance their academic communication skills, and foster in-depth exchanges across institutions and research directions.

Looking Ahead: Conference Concludes, Collaboration Continues

The successful convening of I3CSE 2026 provided a high-quality academic exchange platform for experts and scholars in civil, building and structural engineering. Participants remarked that the conference program closely aligned with industry priorities including engineering safety, green and low-carbon development, intelligent construction, and structural health monitoring — broadening academic horizons while fostering interdisciplinary, cross-regional, and cross-institutional collaborative dialogue. Moving forward, I3CSE will continue to serve as a vital academic platform, supporting technological innovation, talent cultivation, and engineering practice advancement in civil, building and structural engineering.
